You’re likely here because you are exhausted with feeling at odds with your body and desire a more peaceful relationship with your body

A relationship that allows you to live fully and authentically without endless cycles of self-criticism

Body positive therapy offers an opportunity to create a healthier relationship with your body — one that allows you to live fully and authentically, and helps stop the cycleof self-criticism.

As a woman who became completely bald by the age of 6 years old, I was always acutely aware of how unrealistic beauty standards are and how large of an impact societal narratives about “attractiveness” can impact one’s self-esteem and sense of worth.

I know I am not the only one, whether you experience a visible body difference or not, we live in an appearance obsessed world that makes it SO hard to feel positive about one’s appearance. That is why my approach to body-positive therapy is designed to be realistic and attainable. I know that for many groups of people “self-love” does not feel completely accessible.

My approach to body image therapy focuses on helping my clients redefine the importance of appearance in their life, building self compassion and body-neutrality practices, using self acceptance > self love and cultivating a relationship to your body that allows you to live the one life you have to the fullest extent.

Improved body image doesn’t mean constantly generating positive thoughts about your appearance. In fact, good body image often looks like less preoccupation with body thoughts altogether. By using body neutrality and self-compassion, negative body thoughts gradually lose their grip, freeing up your energy to focus on what truly matters to you. Over time, this shift naturally builds confidence, resilience, and self-esteem.

Instead of focusing on using positive affirmations or methods of self-love, body neutrality and self compassion practices allow your current negative body thoughts to loosen their grip. Overtime, your brain starts to view these thoughts as less and less important thus freeing up your brain space to focus on things that truly feel important to you. When you have the space to think and act in alignment with your values, it starts to build more confidence and self-esteem… and suddenly you may start to notice a bad body image day does not hold the same power over you or that you automatically start speaking more kindly to yourself.

It is possible your body image distress may also overlap with…

  • Social anxiety

  • Perfectionism

  • Feeling “too much” or “not enough”

  • Patterns of overthinking

  • Loneliness or increased isolation

  • Disordered eating or an eating disorder

Together, we will create an individualized treatment plan for your specific body image distress and its related struggles that are impairing your life.

It may feel far away right now, but with the right support, you can find peace with your body. You can begin to feel that your body is enough — in every season of life. And through body positive therapy, I can help you get there.

And I can help you get there.

Alison Mann is a body image and anxiety therapist in New York

Alison Mann, LMSW

Hi, I’m Alison and I’m a licensed psychotherapist.

I am passionate about working with adolescents and adults who are navigating issues with, but not limited to, anxiety/OCD, body image, eating disorders, athletic pressures, chronic illness/pain, ADD/ADHD and body focused repetitive behaviors. I offer a warm, non-judgmental space for us to work together and explore how your life experiences may have led you to feel unable to reach your full potential.

My approach balances having space for reflective growth while also identifying concrete skills and coping tools tailored to your unique goals. I use an integrative approach that draws from numerous modalities such as CBT, DBT, ERP, psychodynamic and mindfulness. I also have training in Mirror Exposure Therapy and CBT-E.

I am passionate about changing/educating about the larger societal messages & beauty standards that make it so much harder for people to live their best life. I firmly believe that we must celebrate diversity of all kinds & that attractiveness comes from our differences rather than the stereotypical narrative and images we’ve been sold.

I look forward to providing the safe space needed to help you and your children thrive.
